Fierce Battle of Virtual Assistants: By the End of the Year, Google Assistant Will Speak 30 Languages

Google’s voice assistant will be available in 30 different languages by the end of the year, the company announced on Friday after a fierce battle against market leader Amazon. While Alexa (Amazon) only operates in English, Google Assistant already works in eight languages and “by the end of the year will be available in more than 30 languages,” Google emphasizes on its official blog.

It will start with Danish, Dutch, Hindi, Indonesian, Norwegian, Swedish, and Thai, and later in the year with other languages, says the American company. This announcement illustrates Google’s desire to improve its voice assistant and make progress in artificial intelligence, especially in competition against Amazon.

Other tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, or Samsung also offer virtual assistants.

By launching Alexa in its smart speaker Echo in 2014, Amazon gained an advantage. Apple is lagging behind and has just launched its smart speaker HomePod, which is activated by voice thanks to the virtual assistant Siri.
