Estonia on Saturday celebrates 100 years of independence from the Russian Empire.
Estonia declared independence from the Russian Empire on February 24, 1918. It was part of it for nearly 200 years. In 1940, it was occupied by the Soviet Union, and independence was declared again in 1991. It is now a member of the EU and NATO.
“Estonia’s independence is now better protected than ever before because we have friends and allies,” said Parliament President Eiki Nestor at the start of the ceremonial marking of this significant anniversary. “Estonia is part of the free world.”
During the day, there will be a military parade, as well as a concert at the Estonian National Museum in Tartu, the country’s second-largest city.
