Fire Extinguished in the Laboratory Premises at the Ruđer Bošković Institute

A fire broke out in the synthetic and organic chemistry laboratory at the Ruđer Bošković Institute (IRB) on Wednesday around two o’clock after midnight for yet undetermined reasons, which was successfully extinguished by the timely response of firefighters from the IRB.

The fire caused material damage in the laboratory premises, and no one was injured during the intervention. However, three firefighters were sent for a preventive examination at KBC Zagreb due to smoke inhalation, where no injuries were found, as reported by the IRB.

The Institute notes that there was no danger of the fire spreading beyond the affected room.

After the fire was extinguished, members of the Public Fire Brigade of the City of Zagreb arrived on the scene and determined that there was no danger of explosion in the affected area, while employees of the Public Health Institute ‘Dr. Andrija Štampar’ and the Croatian Institute for Toxicology and Anti-Doping confirmed that there were no chemicals present in the air or other pollution, and that there was no danger to citizens and employees of the IRB.

– After the employees of the Public Health Institute ‘Dr. Andrija Štampar’ determined that there were no gases in the air that could endanger human health, the employees of the Croatian Institute for Toxicology and Anti-Doping officially confirmed that the laboratory can be accessed for remediation without health risks, said Zdravko Lovrić, director of the Croatian Institute for Toxicology and Anti-Doping.

The exact cause of the fire will be known after the investigation.
