The Egyptian Museum in Cairo this week exhibited the “screaming mummy,” which is the son of a pharaoh accused of plotting against his father.
Rarely shown to the public, this mummy known as “Unknown E” displays a tense face with open mouth suggesting a scream of pain.

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, DNA analyses confirmed that this is the son of Ramses III, the pharaoh who ruled between 1186 and 1155 BC.
Marks on the mummy indicate that the man was hanged and covered with sheep skin, which the Egyptians considered unclean.
Pentawere, the son of Ramses III, was sentenced to hanging for participating in a conspiracy against his father.

He conspired with his mother Tiye, the second wife of Ramses III, to murder the pharaoh.
History does not provide clear confirmations on whether Ramses III was murdered, but there are indications that he was stabbed in the neck. Around Ramses III’s neck: an amulet with the Eye of Horus was found, symbolizing comfort and protection, states the Egyptian ministry.
