Fire Devours Elgrad Sales Center in Rijeka, Damage is Enormous

The sales center, or exhibition, production, and storage space of the company Elgrad in Rijeka has completely burned down in a fire on Friday evening, the damage is enormous, and the cause will be determined later.

The investigation will reportedly begin at the earliest on Saturday afternoon, and possibly on Sunday, after the firefighters complete their work and it becomes possible to access the burned area on Škurinjska Road.

The fire, which was reported at 9:20 PM, was extinguished by numerous firefighters from Rijeka, Opatija, Grobnišćina, and Viškovo, and the firefighting was complicated by the fact that there is no hydrant network in the area, so water was supplied by tankers.

The fire has been localized, but firefighters spent the entire night at the scene to prevent it from reigniting.

On Saturday morning, the commander of the Civil Protection and Rescue Headquarters of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Governor Zlatko Komadina, visited the fire site and discussed the details of the incident with the shift commander of the fire station, Boris Kauzlarić, the county reported. “It is important that there are no human casualties,” said the governor, thanking the firefighters for their quick response and bringing the fire under control.

“Our firefighters are the best proof of how important it is for the protection and rescue system to function well,” he said.

The company Elgrad is engaged in the production and confectioning of furniture made from laminated chipboard, so the warehouse and exhibition part of the sales center were full of easily flammable materials that were engulfed by the fire.

The Elgrad sales center is surrounded by warehouses and commercial spaces, and nearby is a large shopping center of Konzum.
