Vučić: We Will Not Ask for Serbia’s European Path, but We Want a Better Relationship with Croatia

Serbia will not ask Croatia to open or close any chapter in the EU negotiations, stated Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on Monday in Zagreb, while his Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović called on the two countries to be mature and resolve open issues without the pressure of the international community.

Vučić hopes that Croatia will not hinder Serbia’s European path, but emphasizes that he will not ask anyone for anything.

– We will not ask anyone for anything, we will not ask Croatia or the EU. If you believe we deserve for you to open a chapter for us, open it. If you believe we deserve to close it, close it, said Vučić at a joint press conference with Grabar-Kitarović.

– But what we will ask for is that we Serbs and you Croats have better relations, because that is of essential importance for both nations, he added.

Regarding Serbia’s European path, Grabar-Kitarović said that her desire and intention is “to show that we are mature and responsible in resolving these issues within our bilateral dialogue and that we do not need pressures from the international community for that.”

She called on the governments of the two countries to start “seriously considering not only all the details of what is stated in the benchmarks for individual chapters but generally anything that burdens the relations between the two countries.”
