MUH against the amendment on mandatory medical examination for driver’s license extension

The Croatian Pensioners’ Association (MUH) expressed outrage over the proposal of the Most Party’s parliamentary group regarding the Road Traffic Safety Act, asserting that Most is “likely under the influence of private medical lobbies, once again seeking to introduce discrimination against older individuals.”

For the extension of a driver’s license, Most repeatedly proposes that individuals over the age of 65 must undergo a mandatory medical examination, while presenting, claims MUH, very questionable statistics on traffic accidents involving older individuals, not only as drivers but also as pedestrians.

– It becomes clear that Most, even before it was in the Government, without any reason or justification, was one of the main proponents for amending the law, with the stipulation that older individuals would have to pay for their medical examinations. This is precisely the goal of the lobby that seems to have a strong influence on Most for reasons unknown. Perhaps they realized that Most consistently promotes their interests, while disregarding the views and arguments of representatives of 1.23 million pensioners and older individuals, states the MUH statement.

Current law aligned with European regulations

Although practices vary in some EU countries, in Germany and France, the laws have almost the same provisions as the current law in Croatia, MUH claims, questioning what prompted Most and those advocating for such a change in the law to impose new costs on already impoverished pensioners, as well as harassment during medical examinations.

Therefore, MUH calls on all parliamentary representatives to demonstrate their democratic commitment and not to succumb to proposals that would introduce provisions with a discriminatory attitude towards older individuals into the law. They also state that the current law, which was adopted in June 2015, is aligned with European regulations.
