Tomorrow marks the first festival in Croatia dedicated to the tie

The institution ‘Academia Cravatica’ is organizing, for the first time this year, a Festival dedicated to the tie, alongside the central celebration of World Tie Day, which will take place from October 14 to 18 in Zagreb, featuring a series of public activities and programs that celebrate the tie as a movable Croatian, as well as European and global heritage. The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness that Croatia is the “homeland of the tie,” and Zagreb is the “capital of the tie.”

Tie Days will begin on Saturday, October 14, with the placing of ties and scarves on about forty Zagreb monuments, sculptures, and busts of notable and historical figures, including the sculptures of Ban Josip Jelačić, King Tomislav, August Šenoa, Marija Jurić Zagorka, Većeslav Holjevac, Petrica Kerempuh, and many others.

The official opening ceremony of the Festival Tie Days will take place on the same day at 6 PM by the fountain at the intersection of Vukovarska and Hrvatske bratske zajednice, featuring a performance by the drumming orchestra of the Honorary Company of the Tie Regiment and the formation of soldiers of the Tie Regiment, along with light projections on the theme of the City of Zagreb – Capital of the Tie, which will illuminate the fountain until the end of the Festival.

The conclusion of the first day of the Festival will be marked by an all-night Tie Party at Opatovina, in the pubs ‘Tolkien’s House’ and ‘Veliki Tolk’, with a mandatory dress code – tie or scarf.

On Sunday, October 15, citizens can expect a historical-military spectacle ‘The Great Change of the Guard’ by the Union of Historical Units with ties, led by the Tie Regiment, in which over 60 members of historical units will participate. Along with the Tie Regiment, the Honorary Protective Battalion of the Armed Forces, the Turopolje Banner of the Noble Municipality of Turopolje, and the Zrinska Guard of Čakovec will parade through the center of Zagreb.

On Wednesday, October 18, the central celebration of World Tie Day will take place at European Square, where at 5 PM an artistic installation Croatian-European Tie by Dinko Domaćinović will be set up, along with a ceremonial and celebratory program. This will be preceded by the Change of the Guard of the Tie Regiment at St. Mark’s Square, which will officially conclude this year’s season of the change of the guard.

This year, the Festival Tie Days will also be joined by the Zagreb ‘Nažigači’ (the one who, by duty, patrols and lights the gas lamps of the city lighting every evening) who will wear ties along with their uniforms during the Festival, and the employees of City Cleanliness in the city center will do the same with the message “White Zagreb City”.

Although scheduled outside the Festival, the exhibition “Croats, French, and the Tie” organized by ‘Academia Cravatica’ will be set up at the Media Library of the French Institute from November 6 to 11, emphasizing the 350th anniversary of the naming of the tie and its entry into high fashion.

The Festival Tie Days is the first festival in Croatia dedicated to the tie, and as a Zagreb festival tourist attraction, it is expected to become a tradition after this inaugural edition.

“The tie, as a unique and today globally indispensable fashion accessory, is an original and authentic Croatian contribution to global dressing culture, as well as to general culture; throughout history, it has grown into a symbol of the civilized world and today is a universal symbol of a range of human values such as dignity, respect, self-awareness, love, ceremony, and elegance,” claim ‘Academia Cravatica’.

The Croatian Parliament has paid special tribute to the tie by declaring October 18, 2008, as Tie Day. Since then, Tie Day has been ceremonially celebrated every year on October 18 as World Tie Day in Croatia, and over the past years, its celebration has begun in various parts of the world. This year, it will be joined by many Croatian expatriates with the support of the Croatian World Congress.
