Scientists from the Swiss Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology estimate that around 43 kilograms of gold worth 1.8 million dollars passes through the wastewater in the country each year, according to Bloomberg.
According to a report, in some areas of the Ticino region located in the south of the country, the concentration of gold in sewage sludge is high enough to potentially recover value. The presence of gold in the sludge is attributed to several gold refineries in the region.

During the research, 64 water treatment plants were surveyed, and around 3,000 kilograms of silver were also found, which corresponds to a value of about 1.7 million dollars that ends up as waste each year, with a good portion being the residue from the chemical and medical industries.
Switzerland is a hub for gold refineries, through which an average of about 70 percent of the world’s gold passes each year.
