If you succumb to the trend and usually wear shoes without socks, you risk more than just smelly feet, as this can lead to the development of persistent fungal infections, warn experts from the London Institute of Podiatry (diagnosing and treating foot diseases).
Podiatrist Dr. Emma Stephenson says that she increasingly encounters problems presented by young men aged 18 to 25. Many complain about the difficulties caused by sweaty feet because they wear shoes without socks to stay trendy or have inappropriate footwear that is not made of natural leather.
Neither girls nor boys have resisted the trend of bare ankles that has recently become fashionable among global celebrities on the red carpet.
Singers Sam Smith and Tinie Tempah often showcase their ‘manly ankles’ when wearing autumn and winter shoe models without socks, and models can often be seen on fashion runways in brogues or sneakers without socks.
Tempah is a frequent guest at London fashion shows. He usually sits in the front row, making it clear that he is wearing shoes on bare feet.

Dr. Stephenson states that ‘feet on average excrete just over two deciliters of sweat daily.’ Excessive humidity and heat can result in infections such as athlete’s foot.
Athlete’s foot or tinea pedis is a fungal infection that usually first appears between the toes, most commonly between the fourth and fifth toes. It occurs more frequently in individuals whose feet sweat excessively, such as athletes or those who spend a lot of time in work shoes.
For young men who want to stay trendy while avoiding ‘earning’ a fungal infection, Dr. Stephenson has several tips:
1. Moderation. Minimize the time spent in shoes without socks.
2. Use a spray against unpleasant foot odor, feet, and shoes.
3. Still wear socks – footies that are not visible and do not peek out from the shoes.
4. If any itching or skin peeling occurs, consult a dermatologist.
