Divjak announced salary increases for teachers starting next year

Minister of Science and Education Blaženka Divjak congratulated all teachers, educators, and professors on World Teachers’ Day on Thursday, ahead of the Government session, announcing that their salaries should be increased and working conditions improved starting next year.

– I congratulate World Teachers’ Day to all teachers, educators, and professors who teach and invest their energy, knowledge, and abilities to make our schools better and implement their mini reforms. I thank everyone for their support of the major educational reform we are working on, Divjak told reporters in front of the Banski Dvori.

400 million kuna for salary increases

She emphasized that the budget for next year plans to allocate 400 million kuna more for salary increases for teachers, educators, and professors, based on what the Government has already agreed upon. She also promised better working conditions, for which funds will be drawn from EU funds for equipping schools, and educational programs will be offered in cooperation with relevant agencies.

When asked for a comment on data showing that Croatian teachers are among the youngest but also among the lowest paid in the EU, she responded that salaries are certainly important, as is material status. We are doing the best we can within our possibilities, she said, reiterating that their salaries will be increased next year.

– The status of teachers is much more important, to enable them to continuously improve, so they can be proud of their profession and we can be proud of them, Divjak said, adding that she is personally proud of Croatian teachers, and it is important that Croatian students receive a “school for life.”
