Last year more buildings were constructed, but fewer apartments

In Croatia, during 2016, the construction of 4,824 buildings was completed, which is 3.9 percent more than the previous year, while the number of completed apartments decreased by 3.1 percent, to 7,809, according to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

According to DZS data, the total area of all buildings completed last year amounted to 1.83 million square meters, which is 3.5 percent less than in 2015.

Of the total number of buildings completed last year, 3,811 or 79 percent are residential, while 1,013 or 21 percent are non-residential.

Among non-residential buildings, the majority are industrial buildings and warehouses, totaling 166. A total of 145 buildings for traffic and communications were completed, with private and public garages dominating this group, and 87 buildings were completed for wholesale and retail trade last year. This is followed by hotels and similar buildings (68).

By counties, the most buildings, 536, were completed in Zadar County. In Istria County, 496 were completed, in Zagreb County 405, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar 384, and in Split-Dalmatia 340.

During the past year, a total of 7,809 new apartments were completed with an average usable area of 94.8 square meters.

The majority of apartments (89.4 percent) were built as new construction, 10 percent through extensions or upgrades of existing buildings, and 0.6 percent through the conversion of non-residential space into apartments.

By counties, the most apartments were completed in Zadar County (1,154), followed by the city of Zagreb (which has the status of a county) – 1,065, followed by Split-Dalmatia (858), Primorje-Gorski Kotar (831), and Istria County (775).
