Perfumes, Toiletries, and Colognes ‘Packed’ with Poisons

Although your perfume or deodorant smells magical, it is very likely that they are full of chemicals and toxic ingredients that can be very harmful to health.

One in three people occasionally experiences symptoms such as headaches, itching, or asthma due to sensitivity to perfume ingredients, claims Kate Grenville, author of ‘The Case Against Fragrance’, basing her data on conducted research, writes Independent.

A separate study from 2014 indicates that as many as three-quarters of women suffering from migraines triggered by various scents claim that perfume is the most common trigger.

The list of harmful ingredients in perfumes includes chemicals such as formaldehyde, toluene, methylene chloride, benzaldehyde, and phthalates.

The mentioned chemicals can cause a whole range of harmful effects, affecting the respiratory organs, liver, kidneys, nervous system, and reproductive organs.

They can disrupt the function of the endocrine system, and some studies have linked them to infertility and the development of certain types of cancer.

But danger does not lurk only in perfumes. Artificial scents are also found in air fresheners, cosmetics, fabric softeners, laundry detergents, scented candles….

Manufacturers are not necessarily required to disclose the ingredients of any perfume or hygiene product related to the term fragrance, as they fall under trade secrets.

Recently, the global organization Environmental Working Group announced that perfumes and other scented products contain natural fragrance essences, but only in traces, and that there are many more synthetic chemicals in perfumes that are not listed on labels.

The French association UFC-Que Choisir, one of the most prestigious European representatives in its field, published a list of cosmetic products that may contain ingredients harmful to human health.
