Plenković: It Would Not Be Good for Collective Amnesia to Occur

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković commented on Friday in Tallinn on the latest accusations from Agrokor owner Ivica Todorić, stating that it would not be good for there to be “collective amnesia” about the reality that existed six months ago.

– There is no talk of government pressure. The Agrokor law was primarily designed to be activated only with the consent of the management, not just the government, and it would not be good for there to be some collective amnesia now, to forget the reality in which the company was at that moment within six months, to forget what is most important about why the law was enacted for companies of systemic importance and the consequences of the domino effect that it could have had on the Croatian economy, said Plenković in Tallinn where he is participating in the EU leaders’ summit.

– We are calm here and doing what we believe is right. I stated at the government meeting what all the scenarios were on the table, we chose this scenario which I believe was the only correct one. The fact is that the company is functioning, that the tourist season was excellent, that jobs have been preserved, that farms have been paid, suppliers are being paid, and that gives me the right to say that what we did was good. What is crucial is that this process continues, leading to a settlement, that is what interests me as Prime Minister who is responsible for the overall functioning of Croatia and the Croatian economy, said Plenković.

When asked what Todorić’s motives for these attacks are, Plenković replied that he does not see what has changed from the beginning of April until a few days ago. “If there was a problem, it could have been anticipated 6, 8, 12, or 16 weeks ago,” he said.

In a new post on his website, former Agrokor leader Ivica Todorić on Friday accused the government of deciding at the beginning of this year to gain control over Agrokor through a prepared maneuver, spreading disinformation and rumors, which caused the company to lose a significant part of its value.

– Through direct political intervention, Agrokor was critically destabilized at the beginning of 2017. This is a key business event and a crucial time in which analyzing will shed light on what happened with Agrokor and who is the real culprit, says Todorić.

He also states that any alarming, especially if disinformative, inaccurate, and tendentious, statement from government officials greatly affects the stock markets, investors, and suppliers.
