Slovenian Government Recruits Experts for Lawsuit Against Croatia

The Slovenian government on Thursday accepted a conclusion to seek EU law experts who would participate in a potential lawsuit against Croatia, after the six-month deadline for implementing the arbitration ruling expires, said Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec after the government meeting on Thursday.

– In the closed part of the meeting, it was decided to seek legal experts from the EU who would represent Slovenia in possible lawsuits against Croatia, Erjavec said, adding that the government accepted the information from his ministry regarding legal options for implementing the arbitration ruling after the expected deadline for its implementation expires at the end of the year.

According to Slovenian media, Erjavec believes that bilateral talks with Croatia on cooperation in the application of arbitration cannot yield results, and that the application of the arbitration line in the Gulf of Piran, “which is clear,” should be approached as soon as possible.

Erjavec confirmed that even after the arbitrators issued the arbitration ruling two and a half months ago, Slovenia continues to cooperate with one of its representatives during the arbitration, Allain Pellet, a French professor of international law, as he is considered the leading expert in maritime law.

Media reports indicate that part of the team of legal experts that Slovenia would engage in the lawsuit against Croatia before the EU court in Luxembourg would be led by Pellet, whose services, they claim, the Slovenian government continues to use for the interpretation of the arbitration decision text.

Additionally, they state that Erjavec believes the Croatian government is mobilizing public opinion on the issue of relations with Slovenia due to internal needs and the crisis it faces due to other political issues.
