MBA Energy Management program – the right choice for comprehensive knowledge of the energy sector

There are only a few educational programs related to energy of exceptional quality in the world. Each of them is unique and has its advantages, but according to Prof. Jonas Puck, academic director of the MBA Executive Management program at the Vienna Business School WU Executive Academy and director of the “Institute for International Business” at the Vienna University WU, there are significant differences that distinguish the MBA Energy Management program from others, as stated in the announcement.

– The MBA Energy Management program is integrated into the industry. No other program of this type in the world includes as many global players from the energy sector, whether they are our lecturers, guest lecturers, or advisory board members. This applies not only to traditional forms of energy such as oil and gas but also to renewable energy sources that are an integral part of the curriculum. As a result, we provide our participants with insights and understandings of the latest trends in the industry, allowing them to acquire the expertise and skills they need to successfully face the global challenges of the 21st century, said Professor Jonas Puck, academic director of the MBA Energy Management program.

TOP market figures as lecturers and support

The quality of the MBA program largely depends on the quality of the lecturers, which is particularly highlighted when it comes to the MBA Energy Management program. Some of the world’s leading experts in energy, such as former OPEC Secretary General Adnan Shihab-Eldin, Secretary General of the Supreme Economic Council of Saudi Arabia Majid Al-Moneef, or director of Sierra Oil & Gas Ivan Sandrea, have actively contributed to the program during its development:

– Whenever I needed advice during the planning of the curriculum, I turned to our advisory board, and the members immediately had answers. Together we created a curriculum that optimally meets the demands and needs of the energy sector. I am also happy that many advisory board members continue to teach as part of the program, continues Professor Puck.

The lecturers in the MBA Energy Management program, in addition to experts from the energy sector, include internationally recognized professors from the Vienna University WU, esteemed partner universities such as Columbia University, INSEAD Business School, Arizona State University, and internationally recognized institutions such as the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.

Carefully selected students from around the world

Participants in the program benefit not only from the quality of the lecturers but also significantly from the interaction with other participants:

– The MBA Energy Management program brings together experts from around the world who exchange experiences and knowledge during classes. Since all our students are experienced managers, in addition to their cultural backgrounds, the programs contribute to a wealth of experience that they willingly share with colleagues. Engineers, geophysicists, and IT specialists join forces with political scientists, legal experts, and financial specialists to work together on globally important issues they face daily. Each of them has their own approach to problem-solving, as many of our decisions are based not only on experience but also on personal attitudes and perspectives. This is precisely the advantage of the MBA Energy Management program – it brings together individuals who exchange knowledge, experiences, and work together to solve problems in a non-hierarchical environment, explained Puck.

“The bigger picture” and smart risk management thanks to a holistic curriculum

Participants in the MBA Energy Management program enjoy all the advantages of a traditional general management program, but they also gain expertise in the core areas of the energy industry, as well as a comprehensive understanding of interdependencies in the global energy system. During their education, program participants have the opportunity to become experts in those topics that particularly interest them by exploring them in more detail. Lecturers and guest speakers from various sectors make this process even easier and more accessible, helping them develop an understanding of the latest trends and developments in the industry.

Professor Puck considers proper risk management to be a significant advantage of the program. The key risk is expansion through diversification for companies operating in unstable markets, where it is difficult to predict future events: “When we talk about risk management, three areas are fundamentally important. First, strategic risk management – traditional energy companies will be advised to invest in other parts of the energy sector. The more diverse your portfolio, the easier it will be to compensate for the loss of a segment. Then there is financial risk management, where the most important question is – What can my company do in terms of reducing financial risk, and which of the available options is best for my case? And finally, executive-level risk management. ‘How can I ensure that I always achieve the best possible results for my business in interaction with the outside world, for example during negotiations with clients or partners, while simultaneously continuing with an internal leadership strategy that protects my and my employees’ interests?’ All these issues are addressed during the MBA Energy Management program, and sharing experiences with colleagues, as well as seeking advice from participants, is extremely beneficial.

International perspective and unparalleled networking opportunities

The MBA Energy Management program is one of the most important international energy-related programs in the world. It is not only the excellent lecturers and participants from around the world that make it so, but also the fact that the international headquarters in the USA leads participants to Texas or California, where they can talk to leaders of leading energy companies such as Halliburton, Aramco, or Bidgely, and in addition, they attend classes at the most renowned universities such as Stanford and Rice.

– The international perspective is not the only reason why the MBA Energy Management provides participants with networking opportunities. The fact that it is a Vienna program is also significant because we have established excellent contacts with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), OPEC, and UNIDO over the years. These close ties are also beneficial to program participants, concludes Prof. Puck.
