According to exit poll results, the CDU/CSU Union of Chancellor Angela Merkel emerged as the strongest party in the elections for the new Bundestag, but like the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), it suffered significant losses, while the right-wing populists from the AfD achieved great success, becoming the third political force behind the social democrats.
Elections in Germany: The Collapse of the Social Democrats
According to the exit poll results from the public broadcaster ARD, the CDU/CSU Union won 32.5 percent of the votes, followed by the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) with 20 percent. This is the worst electoral result for the German social democrats since 1949.

The right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) won 13.5 percent of the votes according to exit polls, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) 10.5, the Green Party 9.5, and the Left Party 9 percent of the votes.
