Cerar took the opportunity to inform diplomats in New York about Slovenia’s positions on arbitration

Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar confirmed on Wednesday that he will meet with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković next week in Zagreb and added that he insists that the main topic will be the implementation of the disputed arbitration ruling on the border between the two countries.

– We have agreed to meet on the 27th of this month in Zagreb where we will continue the discussion about the border between Slovenia and Croatia, during which I will advocate that this must be the central topic of the conversation, and I want to discuss the implementation, said Cerar to STA, who is participating in the UN General Assembly session in New York.

A special bilateral agreement on the border issue is unacceptable for Slovenia, emphasized the Slovenian Prime Minister for Slovenian radio.

Commenting on Donald Trump’s speech at the opening of the session, Cerar highlighted the part where the American president mentioned the importance of “the rule of law” in the arbitration dispute between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea.

In the dispute in the South China Sea, it was also about arbitration, so this is important for Slovenia, said Cerar alluding to the arbitration ruling that Zagreb does not accept.

While the Croatian side does not consider the arbitrator’s decision binding due to the contamination of the process and seeks to resolve the open issue bilaterally, Ljubljana claims that the ruling has become part of European law and that Croatia, as a member of the EU, must respect it.

Cerar emphasized that he used bilateral meetings with heads of delegations and diplomats in New York to present and argue Slovenia’s positions on arbitration with Croatia.
