The Swiss prosecution has launched an investigation to determine why toilets in a bank and three restaurants in the same district in Geneva were clogged with bundles of 500 euro notes totaling 100,000 euros.
The authenticity of the notes has been confirmed; they were likely cut with scissors and thrown into the toilet bowls, explained a spokesperson for the judiciary in Geneva.

All of this occurred in May when the toilets at the UBS bank branch were first clogged.
Just a few days later, a similar situation occurred in the restrooms of three restaurants in the same district.
Authorities managed to retrieve part of the money, according to investigators who at this stage declined to disclose further details. However, the daily newspaper Tribune de Geneve reports that the money belonged to Spanish women who deposited it in a safe in Geneva a few years ago.
So far, there are no indications that this could involve dirty, illegally obtained money.
A spokesperson for UBS bank declined to comment on the investigation.
