In the ‘funny elections’, underage voters placed their highest trust in Angela Merkel’s party

In the funny elections held on Friday in Germany, children under 18 years old chose the party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel as their favorite party, media reported.

The conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) received 28.37 percent of the children’s votes, followed by the left-center Social Democrats (SPD) with 19.87 percent, according to the results.

Children and teenagers voted at a total of 1,600 polling stations across Germany in the funny elections for those who are not yet eligible to participate in the parliamentary elections on Sunday, September 24.

The third strongest party chosen by children is the Greens, who received 16.67 percent of the votes, more than double the support they received according to recent electoral surveys.

The voting is complemented by the far-left Linke (Left) with 8.17 percent, the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 6.8 percent, and the Free Democrats (FDP) with 5.7 percent.

In the last general elections in 2013, about 200,000 young people participated, and organizers expect more voters this year.

The results largely reflect expectations for adults with voting rights in the German elections on September 24, with one survey published on Thursday showing that the CDU is receiving 37 percent of the votes.

The children’s elections held on Friday were organized by youth political organizations, aiming to promote engagement among young people.

“Elections for those under 18 are a clear signal to politicians about which issues are important among children and adolescents,” said Family Minister Katarina Barley ahead of the elections.
