Genos: Croatian Scientists Discover Glycan Biomarkers That Can Predict Diabetes

Scientists from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry and the company Genos led a large study involving researchers from England, Scotland, Finland, Australia, and China, and by analyzing glycans linked to plasma proteins in over 1500 individuals with diabetes, they determined that glycan biomarkers can identify individuals at high risk for developing diabetes, it was announced on Friday by Genos.

Changes in glycans occur years before the first appearance of disease symptoms, allowing for very early diagnosis and preventive action to delay or even completely avoid the development of diabetes. The results of this research were published in one of the leading international journals in the field of diabetes, “Diabetologia.”

Although it will likely take several years before the application of this biomarker in routine clinical practice, a large project for its clinical validation has been planned as part of the Competence Center project in personalized medicine, which will involve nearly 2000 participants in Croatia, allowing them to be among the first in the world to try this test.

– Glycans have exceptional diagnostic potential, but due to their complexity, they are still not sufficiently researched. I am pleased that international reviewers recognized the importance of our research published in one of the leading journals in the field of diabetes. Although we have already analyzed over 1500 people, this will be the first step towards the clinical application of the new biomarker. We have already planned further steps and hope that the new test in the future will enable potential patients to delay or even completely avoid the development of diabetes, said Professor Olga Gornik from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry.
