American Diplomats in Cuba Attacked by ‘Sonic Weapons’

Disturbing stories of American diplomats in Cuba suffering from hearing loss and brain damage gain a new, even more terrifying background with each new report, and the symptoms of the victims are more serious than previously thought, writes Gizmodo.

The problems of diplomats stationed in Havana reportedly began in late 2016, and Washington has since been working to investigate the reasons behind the permanent hearing damage, mild traumatic brain injuries, and even damage to the central nervous system that diplomatic representatives have suffered. The State Department remains silent on the details, stating that the investigation is ongoing and that they respect the privacy of the victims.

Earlier reports contain claims from American officials who believe that advanced sound weapons operating beyond the range of sound that the human ear can hear were used against American diplomats and their family members. They also believe that the devices were deployed within and around the American embassy or in the homes of diplomats. However, inspections of these locations conducted by the FBI and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police found nothing, and one incident reportedly occurred at the Capri Hotel in Havana.

The most challenging part of the investigation is that the incidents vary depending on the victim. The report states that there are strong indications that a sonic attack occurred, as some victims felt vibrations and heard sounds similar to the chirping of crickets and loud ringing, while others heard noise similar to that produced during grinding. Some victims were awakened by a buzzing in their ears; after moving away from the bed, the noise disappeared, and the attacks most often occurred at night.

In other cases, victims did not hear any sounds before their symptoms began, such as brain swelling, dizziness, nausea, severe headaches, balance problems, and frequent buzzing in the ears. The number of victims is 21 individuals, and the Canadian government claims that fewer than ten of their diplomatic households experienced symptoms related to the attacks.

Although the U.S. has a long history of conflict with Cuba, Canada has had good relations with the country since the U.S. severed diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1959. These facts suggest that the Cuban government is potentially not responsible for the attacks, especially since officials from Havana are participating in the investigation, making it difficult to find a reason why Cuba would risk destroying its already fragile new relations with the U.S.
