Today in Croatia: ‘Back to School’ for Representatives

We announce the most important events in Croatia for Friday, September 15.

ZAGREB – The Croatian Parliament on Friday, after a two-month break, will begin a new, fifth session and the regular autumn session with the current morning. The Parliament usually starts new sessions on Wednesdays, but this time it will exceptionally start on Friday, as next week Prime Minister Andrej Plenković will be at the UN General Assembly, and the session must begin with the current morning. If we do not start on Friday, we would only begin on September 27, which would be unacceptable and would meet with public condemnation, explained the President of the Parliament Gordan Jandroković recently. The fifth session will last until the end of October, and there are currently more than a hundred items on the agenda. The first report from the Prime Minister on the state of the nation is eagerly awaited, probably at the end of September. Among other things, the Parliament is waiting for reports from the President of the Supreme Court on the state of the judiciary and on the work of the State Attorney’s Office for the past and the year before last. During the autumn, representatives will express their opinions on numerous legislative proposals, including the new Law on the Rights of Croatian Veterans from the Homeland War, and the proposal to postpone the implementation of the property tax. They should complete the composition of the Constitutional Court, that is, elect three judges, which they did not do last summer when the opposition SDP conditioned the agreed election with the establishment of a parliamentary investigative committee for Agrokor. According to unofficial information, the SDP has since withdrawn its condition for support (9:30 AM, St. Mark’s Square 6).

ZAGREB – On the occasion of the cancellation of the HTV show “Croatia Live”, the Croatian Journalists’ Association (HND) is organizing a protest at 9 AM in front of the Croatian Parliament building. The HND stated that the show, which has been an example of the type of program that public media services should nurture for years and in which information about people and events that could not find their deserved place in other programs was published, was canceled without logical explanation and at the last minute, even though it was planned in HTV’s autumn programming scheme.

ZAGREB – The initiative ‘I Am Worth More’ announced a protest ‘From Measure to Barrier – Young People Are Worth More’, for the restoration of dignity and perspective for young people. The initiative was launched by the Association of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (SSSH), the Croatian Trade Union Confederation (MHS), and the Youth Network of Croatia (MMH), and the key demand of the protest is the abolition of the SOR and the restoration of internships. The organizers want to draw attention to, as they say, the diversity and creativity of the ways in which employers exploit the measure and the existence of bizarre occupations under the SOR where the measure serves only as a state subsidy for employers so that they do not have to employ workers through employment contracts, along with all the rights and obligations that belong to them (5:30 PM, St. Mark’s Square).

PULA – The city of Pula is marking the 70th anniversary of the end of Anglo-American military administration over Pula, and the central ceremony will be held at the Istrian National Theatre (11 AM). The Association of Anti-Fascist Fighters and Anti-Fascists of the City of Pula and the City of Pula are organizing the laying of wreaths at 9 AM at the City Cemetery at the Monument to Fallen Anti-Fascist Fighters of the City of Pula, at 9:20 AM on Tršćanska Street at the Monument to Fallen Workers in the Defense of Elektromlina, at 9:40 AM in Tito’s Park at the Monument to Fallen Fighters and Victims of Anti-Fascism, and at 10 AM in the park by the Cathedral at the Monument to the Victims at Vargarola.
