Heavy rain in Zadar flooded houses and basements on Monday morning, the Zadar County Center 112 was inundated with calls from citizens, and the Meteorological Station Zadar reported that from 8 to 10 in the morning, about 190 liters of rain fell per square meter in the city, which is more than double the average monthly precipitation of 98 liters.
Local media report that parts of the Zadar hospital are flooded, the sports hall of Krešimir Ćosić is leaking, and some business premises are affected.
The County Center 112 briefly reported that they are overwhelmed with calls from citizens and have a large number of interventions due to the heavy rain. Due to the severe weather, some schools canceled classes, and parts of the city are without electricity. Roads and basements are flooded.
Firefighters and drainage officials have their hands full. Not all traffic lights on Zadar’s roads are functioning.
Mobile networks are experiencing outages and occasional interruptions in the operation of base stations. The severe weather that affected Istria yesterday expanded to the Zadar area on Monday. The cause of such precipitation is a large Cumulonimbus cloud that has ‘stuck’ to Velebit, and since there is no wind, the cloud is static, full of moisture, and it is pouring rain from it. Currently, this cloud is like a small nuclear power plant, said Anđelko Vidović, head of the DHMZ Meteorological Station in Zadar, for Hina.
He added that such weather in the Zadar area will last until late afternoon. Vidović reported that the highest amount of rain in Zadar fell on September 10, 1986, with 352 liters per square meter.
Severe weather in Istria, apartments and basements flooded
Heavy rain accompanied by thunder has been falling across Istria since Sunday evening, and the most critical situation is in the areas of Poreč, Rovinj, and Labin, from where the County Center 112 received numerous reports of fallen trees and large amounts of water on the roadway, and during the night, about 20 reports of flooded apartments, business premises, and basements were received.
The commander of the Fire Brigade of Istria County, Dino Kozlevac, stated for Hina that regardless of the large amount of precipitation, the situation is under control, and from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning, there were about 30 interventions, mainly for pumping water out of flooded apartments and basements in the Poreč area.
The severe weather primarily affected the central part of Istria, Pazin, Poreč, and Rovinj, as well as the areas of Pula, Umag, Buzet, and Labin. In addition to firefighters, employees of Istrian Roads, HEP, and Cesta d.o.o. and other utility companies were also on the ground assisting citizens in pumping out spaces and removing fallen trees.
The swollen Raša River carried away the temporary bridge near Potpićna during Sunday, which was built to allow traffic while the bridge on the Potpićan – Tupljak road is being reconstructed, and during Sunday, there were also occasional but short outages in electricity supply in that area. According to the Istrameta forecast, predominantly cloudy weather with frequent rain and thunderstorms will prevail throughout the day in Istria.
