‘Avalanche of Criticism’: Lidl Apologizes for Removing Crosses

The German retail chain Lidl has apologized, following an avalanche of criticism, for removing crosses from photographs of the Greek island of Santorini on its food products.

On the packaging of the line of Greek products Eridanous, which includes olive oil, a spice mix, and baklava, the famous blue churches of Santorini are depicted, but without crosses.

“We apologize if we have offended anyone. We will change the packaging design as soon as possible,” Lidl stated in a press release.

The design idea was not to take any ideological stances, Lidl claims.

Lidl is one of the largest retail chains in Europe. It operates 10,000 stores in 27 European countries, and this year opened its first store in the USA.

A few days ago, it was announced that Dieter Schwarz, the owner of Lidl, is the richest German with 37 billion euros.
