Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić complained on Monday that Serbs are not particularly inclined to respect their own historical figures, illustrating this with a comparison that Zagreb residents meet in the main city square ‘by the ban’, while Belgraders meet ‘by the horse’.

– We meet ‘by the horse’, while in Zagreb they meet ‘by Jelačić’, Vučić noted while speaking about the monuments to Prince Mihailo Obrenović in Belgrade’s Republic Square and Ban Josip Jelačić in the eponymous Zagreb square, both depicted on horseback.
The Serbian president made this statement in light of the resistance to erecting a monument to the assassinated Prime Minister and President of the Democratic Party Zoran Đinđić in Belgrade, asserting that Đinđić deserves a monument and that it will be erected.

– Of course, I do not agree with everything that was the policy of Zoran Đinđić, but erecting a monument is a demonstration of basic respect. We will erect a monument to Đinđić, he said.
