Close to 96 million euros are being invested by the European Union in the improvement of the water supply network and wastewater treatment systems in Slavonia, Baranja, Istria, and Krk, the European Commission announced on Monday.
Projects in Osijek, Bilje, and Darda, as well as in Istria, were agreed upon back in 2013 for financing in the programming period 2007-2013 and have now been transferred to the new programming period 2014-2020. The only new project is the one on the island of Krk.
The construction of wastewater treatment plants and filtration systems in the urban area of Osijek and in the towns of Bilje and Darda in Osijek-Baranja County will be financed with 19.3 million euros to protect groundwater from pollution. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

Almost 28 million euros are being invested in the improvement of four wastewater treatment plants in Istria, in the urban areas of Poreč North, Poreč South, and Lantern, as well as in Vrsar. This project is expected to be completed in 2018.
With 48.5 million euros, better access to clean drinking water will be provided on Krk, an island with nearly 14,500 inhabitants and where more than five million tourist overnight stays are recorded annually. Almost 40 km of the water supply network will be renewed, six wastewater treatment plants will be built, and 80 km of sewage network will be constructed. After the project’s completion in 2020, the majority of the island will have access to drinking water from the water supply system and will be connected to a modern sewage network, the Commission announced.
