North Korea announced on Sunday that it has successfully tested a hydrogen bomb designed to be mounted on its intercontinental ballistic missile, shortly after Japan confirmed that Pyongyang conducted its sixth nuclear test, reported the South Korean news agency Yonhap.
The hydrogen bomb test ordered by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was “perfectly successful” and represents an “important” step in completing the country’s nuclear weapons program, state television reported.
The announcement came a few hours after a strong artificially induced earthquake near the known nuclear test site, indicating that Pyongyang conducted its sixth nuclear test.
The North Korean news agency KCNA stated that the test was conducted to “examine and confirm the accuracy and credibility” of the country’s technology.
Several national geological institutes recorded unusual seismic activity near the site where Pyongyang conducted earlier tests.
