Jobs’ Mercedes has been photographed many times over the past few years, but always without a registration. How did he manage that? Did he pay a fine every time he encountered the police? Did he receive a special permit? Or did he just have luck?
Steve Jobs or someone close to him found a loophole in California traffic law. Anyone with a new car has six months to put a license plate on the vehicle.
Thus, Jobs made a deal with a leasing company under which he changed cars every six months, swapping one silver Mercedes SL55 AMG for an identical one. By repeating this action, Jobs was never in a car older than six months. Therefore, there were no legal requirements for placing a license plate.
It can also be assumed that the leasing company was happy – they had a generous offer of luxury cars for sale, the previous driver of which was Steve Jobs.
