At the age of 23, Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski is already one of the most recognized and successful physicists in the U.S. Of Cuban-American descent, Gonzalez Pasterski grew up in Chicago and graduated in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in just three years. Need it be mentioned that her grade point average was 5.0? She is currently writing her doctoral thesis with full academic freedom, meaning she can continue her studies on her own terms without staff interference.
Pasterski first attracted the attention of the scientific and academic community after she independently built her own single-engine airplane at the age of 14 in 2008 and documented the process on YouTube. MIT professors Allen Haggerty and Earl Murman saw the video and were astonished. “Our mouths dropped open when we watched it,” recalls Haggerty. “Her potential is off the charts.”

At the age of 16, she piloted an aircraft over Lake Michigan and became the youngest person to ever fly her own plane.
Although Pasterski stands out from most of her peers, her interest is part of a larger trend, particularly among women, to graduate in physics. In 1999, the number of physicists was at its lowest point in the last four decades. However, according to the American Institute of Physics, in 2015, 8,081 physics degrees were awarded, the highest number ever. Some theorize that the increase is a direct result of the trend of women enrolling in that field.
