One directive is shaking Europe. It concerns the mandatory four-month parental leave for fathers that cannot be transferred to the mother. As reported by Jutarnji, many countries are reserved regarding this model of reducing gender inequality. Croatia also has significant reservations.

These four months and at least ten working days of leave for the father after the birth of the child, as well as the right to flexible working arrangements for all employed parents until the child’s 12th year and some other clauses, will minimally deplete the state treasury, may slightly reduce gender inequality, but the demographic impacts of this measure are questionable.
Until now, employers and headhunters – openly or discreetly – have inquired candidates about their family situation, children, plans, and stance on parenthood. Consequently, they have been less likely to hire potential mothers. If the new directive comes into effect, they will equally inquire about potential fathers. Thus, they will more frequently hire those who note in their CV that they have undergone a vasectomy.
