Employment Increased by 1.1 Percent

At the end of July, there were 1.405 million employed persons in Croatia, which is 15,445 persons or 1.1 percent more than a month earlier, representing an increase in employment for the fifth consecutive month, according to data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS).

The increase in employment for the fifth consecutive month is in line with seasonal trends, as employment typically begins to rise in the spring months and declines at the end of summer, after the tourist season.

The largest portion of the total number of employed consists of employees in legal entities, of which there were about 1.176 million at the end of July – an increase of 1.0 percent or about 12,000 persons compared to the previous month.

In crafts and liberal professions, there were about 210,100 employed, which is approximately 3,440 persons or 1.7 percent more than the previous month. The number of employed insured farmers in July was 19,542, which is three persons less than a month earlier.

Out of 19 activity groups according to the National Classification of Activities, in July, the number of employed increased on a monthly basis in 13 of them.

Notably, the number of employed in tourism and hospitality increased the most, by 8.0 percent, followed by other service activities with an employment growth of 5.6 percent. On the other hand, the number of employed in education decreased the most, by 1.5 percent.

On an annual basis, however, in July, a decline in employment was recorded in 15 out of 19 activities, with the largest drop in other service activities, by 6.1 percent. In mining and quarrying, employment fell by 6.0 percent.

Conversely, the number of employed in water supply, wastewater removal, waste management, and environmental remediation activities increased the most in July on an annual basis, by 1.8 percent.

In the manufacturing industry, which employs the most, about 205,000 persons, the number of employed remained unchanged on a monthly basis in July, while it fell by 2.2 percent on an annual basis.

In wholesale and retail trade, which employs about 188,600 persons, the number of employed increased by 0.7 percent on a monthly basis in July, while it fell by 2.8 percent on an annual basis.

According to data that DZS obtains from the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ), at the end of July, there were 170,127 unemployed persons, which is about 940 persons or 0.6 percent more compared to the previous month. Therefore, the registered unemployment rate in July remained unchanged compared to June, at a record low of 10.8 percent.
