The Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe has received over 1,000 criminal complaints against Chancellor Angela Merkel for treason since the outbreak of the refugee crisis in 2015, but all complaints have been dismissed as unfounded, German media reported on Wednesday.
“All criminal complaints against Chancellor Angela Merkel have been dismissed as unfounded,” said Frauke Koehler, spokesperson for the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe, to the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper.
According to the newspaper, most of the complaints were filed by supporters of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has focused a significant part of its political activity on criticizing Angela Merkel’s refugee policy.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office at the Supreme Court is responsible for acts that threaten national security and must verify every complaint that falls under this area.
Angela Merkel was booed by part of the audience during a campaign appearance in eastern Germany on Tuesday, where the AfD enjoys above-average popularity.
The German Chancellor defended her refugee policy again at her regular summer press conference on Tuesday.
