We announce the most important events in Croatia for Wednesday, August 30:
ISLAND KORNAT – President Kolinda Grabar Kitarović will participate in the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Kornat tragedy (11 AM). Wednesday marks the tenth anniversary of the Kornat tragedy, the largest tragedy in the history of Croatian firefighting and the largest peacetime tragedy in Croatia, in which 12 firefighters lost their lives, with only the firefighter from Tisno, Frane Lučić, surviving. The Kornat tragedy occurred on August 30, 2007, when 12 firefighters from Šibenik, Vodice, and Tisno died during a routine fire extinguishing intervention on the island of Kornat.
DRNIŠ – President Kolinda Grabar Kitarović will meet with the Mayor of Drniš, Josip Begonja, and will visit the burned areas (3:30 PM).
ZAGREB – Following the decisions made at last week’s session of the HNS Presidency, the party is launching a political initiative for the urgent implementation of educational reform, which will be reported at a press conference. Speaking will be the acting president of HNS, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction and Spatial Planning Predrag Štromar, and the president of the HNS Club of Representatives in the Parliament and Mayor of the City of Ivanec Milorad Batinić (9 AM, HNS Central Office, Kneza Mislava 8).
OSIJEK – The Association of Families of Detained and Missing Croatian Veterans will mark the International Day of the Disappeared. Families of missing veterans and civilians will send messages to the local community, institutions, and society as a whole, and they expect public authorities to publicly express their views on the process of resolving the issue of missing persons. The commemoration will begin at 9:30 AM with the laying of wreaths and a prayer at the common ossuary at the Osijek Central City Cemetery, and after the mass at 11 AM in the Osijek Cathedral, a commemorative program will be held at Ante Starčević Square in Osijek at 12:30 PM.
