Petrović: The EU Seeks Efficiency, Not Privatization

Denis Petrović, the director of the business consulting department at KPMG, delivered a presentation titled ‘Strategic Planning and Controlling in Companies of Strategic State Interest’ as part of the conference State and Efficient.

He pointed out the fact that strategic planning is sparse in the current situation in state-owned enterprises, emphasizing that enhanced monitoring of the performance of state-owned companies and accountability of management should be a priority task.

“It seems that we still do not understand what it means to own, for example, railways, roads, or forests. The EU seeks efficiency, not privatization,” Petrović explained, adding that EU membership is a strategic decision that needs to be adapted to one’s own structure.

He also emphasized that the mission cannot be defined before knowing the framework in which the company operates, as in such situations it happens that the company does not manage by directive but follows it. He highlighted the importance of recognizing trends, adapting strategies, and organizing management processes.

In his presentation, he concluded by stating that transparent operations without strategy and operational controlling do not exist, and controlling is, in his view, an instrument of creation.
