By the end of 2017, Adidas plans to sell at least one million pairs of shoes that will be partially made from ocean waste. Each pair of shoes will contain an average of 11 plastic bottles, writes Digital Journal.

The German sports footwear brand Adidas, in partnership with the environmental initiative Parley for the Oceans, launched a limited edition of sneakers made from plastic waste from the ocean last year. Adidas announced that it will release three new models of running shoes with the same eco-composition for sale on May 10, thereby achieving its goal of producing a million pairs of UltraBoost sneakers this year using ocean plastic.

– Our belief is that through sports we have the power to change lives. We are one of only a few companies that integrate sustainability into our business model, which becomes most evident through the fact that we embed sustainability at the product level. We do not see sustainability merely as a competitive advantage, but as an obligation to operate responsibly in a sustainable manner as a global company, said Adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted.

The sneakers will not be made entirely from recycled ocean plastic, which will primarily be used for the upper part of the shoe, while other parts will also use as many renewable materials as possible.

It is estimated that plastic waste accounts for 80 percent of pollution in the world’s oceans. It is believed that 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste are floating in the oceans, and this type of pollution directly threatens more than 600 marine species.
