Spiegel whistleblower reveals that German intelligence has been spying on Interpol and Europol for years

The German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) has been spying on the international police organization Interpol for several years, reported the German magazine Der Spiegel on Saturday, citing documents it possesses.

In addition to spying on Interpol’s headquarters in Lyon since 2000, the BND monitored offices of this police network in Austria, Denmark, Greece, the United States, and dozens of other countries, the magazine writes. The watchlist included email addresses, as well as telephone and fax numbers. Besides Interpol, this German service also tracked data from Europol, the European Union’s security service in The Hague.

A spokesperson for the German Greens, Konstantin von Notz, called this case “scandalous.” He emphasized that the fact that such information was revealed by journalists and whistleblowers like Edward Snowden is evidence of the “ineffectiveness of parliamentary oversight.”

Der Spiegel reported in February that the BND has been monitoring foreign journalists from the BBC, New York Times, and other news organizations in several countries since 1999.
