The government commissioner for Varaždinske Toplice, Miroslav Hreljac, caused a traffic accident on Saturday evening in which two people were injured. He registered a blood alcohol level of 1.39, which is not the excess of one glass, but of an entire bottle. Now one could moralize about politicians under the influence with their foot on the gas – Habuš, Bandić. But who is Miroslav Hreljac? He was the secretary of Varaždinske Toplice during the HSLS mayor Kranjčec’s term – until 2013. He was also the director of Radio Varaždin. Therefore, one could say he is qualified. However, the government appointed Hreljac as commissioner in January, at the age of 72?! Had he not looked at the bottom of the glass, this information would have gone unnoticed by the public.

The government is poor, and the city is poor when a commissioner must be a person pulled from deep retirement. This case raises questions about the non-transparent staffing at closed government sessions. The public receives only terse statements with the names of those appointed, but without mentioning any qualifications or biographical details. Thus, it was only journalists who discovered that Krešimir Žagar had been appointed as the head of Croatian Forests, who had to resign because he was in a conflict of interest as the mayor of Đakovo.
