European Parliament Adopts Resolution Against Russian Propaganda

Russia and Islamist terrorist groups are increasingly targeting the EU with propaganda, warns the resolution approved by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in an effort to resist anti-European campaigns.

The decision states that Moscow spreads propaganda through media and other means – in an attempt to incite fear and division.

– What this report tries to do is point the finger in at least one direction, or, let’s say in one and a half directions, towards Russia and ISIS, said Austrian MEP Eugen Freund from the left-center position.

– And to explain that various Russian entities, ‘Russia TV’, Sputnik (portals accused of serving the Kremlin) and so on are trying to influence the European audience. They are trying to divide Europe and the United States, they are trying to belittle what the US and the European Union are doing.

In a swift reaction from Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin says that the resolution speaks volumes about democracy in the West.

– We are observing a completely obvious degradation, in the political sense of the word – regarding the perception of democracy in Western society. In this case, at the level of the European Parliament – said Putin.

European lawmakers believe that Russia has intensified its anti-EU propaganda following the annexation of Crimea and that it is directed at European institutions. The Parliament proposes promoting better general awareness, education, and investigative journalism, reports EuroNews.
