The new Nintendo console has been talked about for almost a whole year, and the company has now released the first official information. This time, the emphasis is not on technology – although many details are still unknown – but on what you can do with it.
The new console is called Nintendo Switch and brings a hybrid concept between portable and home consoles that has not been seen on the market before. Portable consoles have always been Nintendo’s strong suit, but when it comes to living room products, the company did not achieve the expected success with its last console, the Wii U. The Nintendo Switch is expected to bring the best of both worlds – a console that can be connected to a television just like a Playstation or Xbox, but also easily portable thanks to its built-in screen and controls. The conceptual gap between portable and home consoles is solved by a special dock into which the console is placed when it is to be used on the television and removed when its built-in screen is to be used. The controls are particularly interesting, as they can be detached from the console and used in various ways, depending on the situation. The entire concept is actually like a sort of inversion of the Wii U, but the real question is whether there is still room for such devices in today’s world of smartphones. Judging by the initial marketing campaign, Nintendo is this time targeting a slightly older population that might be willing to spend money on a special device that offers significantly more comfortable mobile gaming. It is expected to be available for sale in March next year.
