I have already written about Most’s blackmail, which is becoming the foundation and starting point of the upcoming ruling coalition. I still believe that this combination of mostly social-populist measures is marginal and that Croatia will be neither better nor worse with them, just as without them.
The compromise on disciplining parliamentary representatives is, however, the pinnacle of hypocrisy. They will be fined 500 kuna for not attending sessions. But, lo and behold, they can still mark their attendance from Monday to Thursday without penalty; they just have to show up for voting on Friday. Thus, Most and HDZ, under the guise of reducing parliamentary privileges, have elegantly secured – a voting machine. They still remember the collapse of quorums, which was the most popular opposition parliamentary sport in the last term. The best party discipline is, after all, the one that hits the pocket.
