The new project of the ‘stoned’ and politically incorrect band of comedians led by actor Seth Rogan is the animated film ‘Sausage Party’ in which supermarket items, like the followers of Abrahamic religions, wait for gods, here embodied in the form of consumer humans, to choose them from the shelves and transport them to a better world. However, the items gradually realize that the better world is a deception and that only horror awaits them on the other side.
The allusions to monotheistic religions and the beliefs of their followers in eternal life are more than obvious, and hedonism, atheism, and a lifestyle devoid of any sexual taboos are the utopia that the filmmakers long for. While such a view of the artist is legitimate, even interesting, it is by no means revolutionary, as directors Tiernan and Vernon believe.
‘Sausage Party’ thus turns out to be only a mild satire, occasionally very humorous and imaginative, but the final result is far from the surgically precise analysis of society that we find, for example, in the latest episodes of ‘South Park’. Perhaps it would have been more interesting if the creators had delved a little more into the theory of the universe as a simulation, which is only hinted at at the end of the film. All in all, a fun piece, but in terms of the amount of humor and hilarious gags, it is inferior to its predecessors, such as the excellent ‘This Is the End’.
