Vedriš on the Economic Policy of the New Government: Good as Architecture, but the Question of Construction Remains

– Andrej Plenković provided a realistic starting framework for the creation of the economic policy program. The emphasis is primarily placed on the prerequisites for economic development – the orderliness of the legal system, the uniformity of laws, and greater efficiency of the judiciary. After that, discussions can be held about a better business climate, lower perception of state risk, and thus a better position with rating agencies and lower interest rates. All of this is interconnected, commented economic expert Prof. Dr. Mladen Vedriš for Lider regarding the speech in which the economic policy of the future Government was presented by the president of the HDZ, Andrej Plenković, at Lider’s conference ‘Day of Great Plans’.

Željko Lovrinčević: Gaps in the Presented Economic Policy Plans of the Future Government

Let us recall that the likely future mandate for forming the new Government, Plenković, outlined five pillars of development that include the implementation of a comprehensive tax reform, investment in growth generators (agriculture, tourism, domestic production, exports), increasing the efficiency of institutions, reducing the budget deficit, and reforming the education system to prevent the exodus of youth and ensure a quality workforce.

– Plenković’s performance reflects an awareness of the problem and priorities. This is good as architecture, but the question of construction remains – the project framework is good, but quality foundations must be laid, and the building must be raised floor by floor; reform by reform. Additionally, Zdravko Marić, technically, and probably the future Minister of Finance, spoke constructively about the role of fiscal policy. Summa summarum, it seems we are returning to more realistic topics of conversation and priorities, concluded Prof. Dr. Vedriš, emphasizing that the contours of the economic policy program appear reasonably conceived, but we must still wait about 20 days when the comprehensive program will be presented at the first session of the Croatian Parliament.
