‘Golden Age’ of Artificial Intelligence

The biggest names in the technology industry have established a new organization dedicated to promoting artificial intelligence (AI). The founders write on their official website that the partnership was formed to “address the opportunities and challenges” that come with AI technologies.

The “Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society” includes Google, Microsoft, Facebook, IBM, and Amazon.

– AI technologies have enormous potential to improve numerous aspects of life; from health, education, and production to home automation and transportation. We will openly share our work with the public, encouraging its participation. The actions of the partnership, including most discussions, meetings, results, and guidelines, will be publicly available – states the press release regarding the formation of the organization, which includes prominent individuals from the tech sector such as Facebook’s AI department head Yann LeCun, DeepMind project leader under Google Mustafa Suleyman, Professor Francesca Rossi from IBM’s Watson Research Center, Amazon’s Director of Machine Learning Greg S. Corrado, and the Executive Director at Microsoft’s research lab in Redmond, Eric Horovitz.

‘Golden Age’

Artificial intelligence is increasingly finding applications in everyday life, whether it is rudimentary ‘assistants’ in smartphones or striking data analysis that led to DeepMind’s victory in the most complex board game Go. Experts have declared the recent victory of artificial intelligence in the match against world champion Lee Sedol a ‘defining moment’ that arrived a full decade ahead of all expectations.

DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis says his team is working on creating an artificial hippocampus, the area in the human brain responsible for emotional responses, memory analysis, context creation, and creativity as such. DeepMind has been owned by Google since 2014.

– We are in the golden age of machine learning and artificial intelligence – said Amazon’s Director of Machine Learning Ralf Herbrich about current trends. – As a scientific community, we are still far from being able to do things the way humans do, but we are solving incredibly complex problems every day and making incredibly rapid progress.

Alongside supporters, the development of artificial intelligence also has prominent opponents, among whom Elon Musk is particularly fervent, holding the view that AI is ‘potentially more dangerous than nuclear bombs’.
