Environmental fee increases by 15 to 40 kuna, depending on mileage

The Ministry of Environment and Nature intends to propose to the Government an increase in the environmental fee for personal vehicles that travel more than 10,000 kilometers annually, ranging from 15 to 40 kuna per year depending on the mileage and the amount of carbon dioxide emissions produced. If the Government adopts this proposal, the environmental fee for personal vehicles would only increase for vehicles whose owners travel more than 10,000 kilometers annually, the Ministry stated.

For vehicles whose owners travel between 10,000 and 20,000 kilometers annually, the fee would increase on average by 15 kuna, for those traveling between 20,000 and 30,000 kilometers it would rise by 30 kuna per year, and for those above 30,000 kilometers, the fee would increase by 40 kuna per year, the media reports.

The Ministry emphasizes that personal vehicles in Croatia travel an average of 12,000 kilometers annually, and 75 percent of personal vehicles are below the threshold of 20,000 kilometers traveled. They also state that the proposed changes establish a fairer calculation model, taking into account the fundamental principle of environmental protection – “the polluter pays”.

This is a proposal to amend the Regulation on unit fees, corrective coefficients, and more detailed criteria and measures for determining the special environmental fee for motor vehicles.

The Ministry highlights that the goal of the regulation amendment is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase the number of vehicles with less than 90 or 100 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. Such vehicles were an exception until a few years ago, but today they are the rule, the Ministry says.
