Plenković Begins Negotiations for a Stable Government, Milanović Calls for a Grand Coalition, and Petrov Sets a Deadline for the Big Players

At exactly midnight, the president of the State Electoral Commission, Branko Hrvatin, reported at a press conference on the preliminary results of the early elections.

After processing 84 percent of the voting body, HDZ has 61 mandates, the People’s Coalition 54, Most 12, Živi zid 8, IDS 4, BM 365 2, HDSSB 1, and the Independent List of Željko Glasnović 1.

After that, the leader of the SDP, Zoran Milanović, addressed the public at the headquarters of the People’s Coalition.

Ivan Vrdoljak, Zoran Milanović, Krešo Beljak

– Thank you to everyone who came out and supported us. This has not been a happy day for Croatia. We do not know what government will be formed now, we are at your disposal. Croatia needs a stable government unlike the last eight months. We did everything to motivate people to go out and vote, but 10 percent fewer did so compared to the last elections. Let’s wait for the morning for complete results. Croatia is important, let’s suppress our vanities, we need a stable government, said Milanović, who thanked partners and everyone who voted, especially those who voted for the SDP and the coalition.

After Milanović, the leader of Most, Božo Petrov, addressed the public.

– Dear friends and citizens, thank you for the trust you have given us to not give up on change. As long as we have your trust, we will strive to fight for our country – I send a message to all young people to stay here, to get involved, and to fight for a better future in Croatia. This Croatia can and must be better. Politics needs to be better, and without you, Croatia will be condemned to live in the past. We no longer expect to move forward because politicians have given their word. However, I will never stop hoping that we will mature as a society enough that we do not have to fear for our homeland. Our guarantees are a step towards a better and fairer future. From this moment, a deadline of 5 days begins for them to express their stance on the guarantees. If they care about Croatia, they will show it in the next five days. If all of this is too difficult for them, let them bypass us immediately. Most does not exist for nice chairs and expensive positions. If they agree, that is a pledge that they are ready to go through the arduous process of reforms and renewal. If they truly care about the citizens of the Republic of Croatia, we will reach an agreement on our guarantees, but also on those major reforms that must be implemented, said Božo Petrov from the Most headquarters.

Finally, the president of the HDZ, Andrej Plenković, addressed the public from the HDZ headquarters.

– I am confident that we are the party that will have the privilege to form a stable future government that will govern for four years. We are open to cooperation with parties that are programmatically and ideologically close to us. I guarantee that the next Croatian government will be stable and European-oriented. From tomorrow, we will begin concrete negotiations so that Croatia can have a stable government led by HDZ.
