French Army Considers Pokémon Go a Security Threat

The French Minister of Defense is concerned about the game Pokémon Go as the appearance of virtual creatures in inconvenient places threatens national security.

Pokémon are located in sensitive areas within ministry buildings and military facilities, and pretending to be innocent players in these zones could also attract individuals who would gather information. The geolocation of players also poses a threat as it could be misused, states a document from the French security service, and the concern does not diminish when considering the possibility of creating addiction among military or defense ministry personnel, which could seriously harm the reliability of intelligence services. There have already been attempts to misuse this game, reports Le Monde.

Due to the security threat, the French army plans to ban playing Pokémon Go in military facilities. In other “sensitive” institutions in France, such as the Nuclear Energy Center, an internal decision has also emerged to ban playing this popular game, which has already been prohibited for security reasons in the armies of the United States, Israel, Thailand, and Indonesia.
