The Construction Sector Has Hit Bottom and Is Starting a Mild Recovery

The latest data from the State Bureau of Statistics (DZS) on 3,624 issued building permits in the first six months of this year, which is 22.8 percent more than in the same period last year, according to analysts at Raiffeisenbank Austria (RBA), indicates that the construction sector in Croatia has hit bottom and is starting a mild recovery.

According to DZS data, 636 building permits were issued in June this year, which is 61 permits or 8.8 percent less than in May, but also 152 permits or 31.4 percent more than in the same month last year. Of these, 519 permits were issued for the construction of buildings, which is a monthly decrease of 6.2 percent, but an annual increase of 36.2 percent. At the same time, the number of building permits issued for other constructions, totaling 117, was 18.8 percent lower on a monthly basis, but 13.6 percent higher on an annual basis.

The projected value of works indicated in the total issued building permits in June amounted to 1.65 billion kuna, which is 9 billion or 18.4 percent higher compared to May. In the cumulative period from January to June, a total of 3,624 building permits were issued, which is 22.8 percent more than in the same period last year.

However, the projected value of works for which permits were issued in the same observed period amounted to only 8.7 billion kuna, which is 14.1 percent less compared to the same period last year.

– Nevertheless, we believe that the indicators suggest that the construction sector has finally hit bottom, encouraging expectations for the beginning of a mild recovery in the upcoming period. After suppressed investment activity by the public sector during the first quarter, a positive effect in the coming periods is expected with the growth of better utilization of funds within EU funds, analysts at RBA assess.
