Almost every person desires a high salary, but a high salary can be misleading if a large portion goes towards everyday living expenses. For this reason, Ideed.com, an American job search portal, researched which cities have the highest average annual salaries, adjusting these amounts for the average living costs in that city, and then compared them to the national average salary.
The research included jobs such as software engineering, programming, and similar roles in the technology industry.
The results of the research showed which cities are the most profitable to live in. At the top of the list is the city of Austin in Texas, known for its growing technology sector with low living costs. The amount of the average salary adjusted for living costs is $95,247 per year.
Among more well-known cities, San Francisco ranks third, the largest metropolis in Silicon Valley, with an average salary of $113,497. After adjusting for living costs, the annual salary is reduced to $90,457.
San Jose, a city also located in Silicon Valley, has seemingly high salaries for jobs in the technology industry amounting to $111,925 per year, but due to high living costs, the salary rating is reduced to $88,085, placing this city in sixth place.
In ninth place is a city where there is also a dramatic difference, namely New York. The average salary is $109,765, and after adjustment, this amount decreases to $85,287.
