Today we witness different sizes of the state and its influence, as well as various measurements of its breadth and results. Jambrač, in his book ‘People, Economy, State’, attempts to measure the strength of the state on a vertical axis, that is, its capacity to assume functions at the subnational level. If we measure that capacity with a typical economic indicator, the share of public expenditure in GDP, then the subnational level of the state has a weak capacity. However, the strength and size of the central level do not necessarily guarantee results. Quality is much more important than size, as demonstrated by Scandinavian countries. They have stimulated economic development through political decentralization, crucial for social development and social mobilization. Therefore, the author concludes, strong political institutions are necessary for economic growth and development.

When the monumental Potemkin facades of the USSR collapsed in 1991, the illusory character of the Soviet past was revealed, as well as the equally unreliable character of the newly formed post-Soviet reality. The Russian transitional reality of the 1990s resembled a hybrid of Disneyland and Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’; it was a consumer park for adults, with wild capitalists, ruthless privatization grabs, bloody mafia showdowns, a completely impoverished populace, and a touch of the ‘specific Russian soul’. This wild period of transition is dedicated to the anthology ‘Potemkin Village’, which features ten of the most prominent representatives of contemporary Russian literary scene. In their stories, they portrayed and unveiled that world torn between the great Soviet myth and an even greater post-Soviet trauma.
